FACT CHECKING THE DNC NIGHT 1
Democrats say they're honest, but they’re not telling the truth.
As Democrats pledged to “restore the soul of our nation” on the first night of the Democratic Convention, they attempted to do so by sowing division, telling outright lies about President Trump’s record and gaslighting their own horrific policy failures.
Here are only a few examples of Democrats spinning wild fairy-tales, touting conspiracy theories, and blatantly contradicting the facts, debunked by independent media fact-checkers and news reports.
LIE: Michelle Obama viciously attacked President Donald Trump for ripping migrant children from their parents and throwing them into cages, as part of his immigration policy.
- FACT: “To say that Obama’s administration did not put people in cages is inaccurate. Obama and Biden in 2014 saw an influx of children arriving at the border without a parent or guardian, and reporting from 2014 by the Arizona Republic referred to a chain-link enclosure holding children as "cages." Indeed, Michelle’s own husband, and president at the time, had the very same policy.
LIE: New York Governor Andrew Cuomo shamefully passed blame on his own horrific coronavirus response. He also bashed the President on the federal coronavirus response, contradicting his earlier praises for the Trump Administration and the help they provided New York.
- FACT: Cuomo is writing a revisionist history. His mismanagement in the early days of the pandemic that made New York’s situation far worse. Thousands of seniors died in nursing homes because of his callous order that recovering coronavirus patients be placed in nursing homes and a mandate barring nursing homes from requiring incoming patients to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.
- In part because Cuomo refused to consider President Trump’s advice, infections spreading from New York at one point accounted for up to 65% of cases across the country. More than 32,000 have died from the virus in New York, and if it were its own country, it would be second only to Italy in COVID-19 deaths.
- Moreover, Cuomo once praised the federal government response in his state, calling the coronavirus response as “extraordinary efforts and acts of mobilization,” and a “tremendous accomplishment.”
LIE: Eva Longoria falsely repeated a debunked Biden claim that the Trump Administration “disbanded the pandemic response team,” established by the Biden-Obama administration within the National Security Council.
- FACT: The group was reorganized within the Trump Administration. The Washington Post: “[T]he [NSC] staff slots did not disappear and at least initially the key mission of team remained a priority. So one can also claim nothing changed and thus Biden’s criticism is overstated.”
- National Security Council official Tim Morrison called the Democrat's claim “specious.”
LIE: Sanders mislead the public when he said since the pandemic began, over 30 million people have lost their jobs and many have lost their health insurance.
- FACT: According to the Washington Post: “The 30-million figure is one way to measure job loss during early stages of the pandemic. It is based on jobless claims but other metrics, such as the monthly employment numbers, suggest much lower numbers. More than 5 million people are estimated to have lost their health insurance.”
LIE: On international relations Michele Obama said, “Internationally, we’ve turned our back—not just on agreements formed by my husband but on alliances championed by Presidents like Reagan and Eisenhower”
- FACT: Obama accused POTUS of "turning our back on alliances" days after he brokered a peace deal between Israel and the United Arab Emirates, two allies the Obama-Biden administration spurned and placed in danger.
LIE: Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer on her coronavirus response, “From the jump, we took this pandemic seriously in Michigan. We listened to medical experts, planned, and with a lot of work from the from the autoworkers and too little help from the White House we executed our plan. We saved thousands of lives. Just imagine if we had a national strategy.”
- FACT: Whitmer ordered Michigan nursing homes to take in coronavirus patients, causing THOUSANDS of seniors to die. Democrats hailing her “leadership” is a slap in the face to the victims of her deadly mismanagement.
LIE: Democrats repeatedly critized President Trump for not taking early and decisive action toward the coronavirus.
- FACT: While Democrats were focusing on impeachment, President Trump and his administration were taking action to combat the coronavirus coming out of China. The White House established a task force in January, and immediately sought to send health experts to China on January 3. For more on the President’s early actions, click here.
LIE: Eva Longoria repeated misleading Democratic talking points on the U.S. Postal Service saying, "Social Security beneficiaries count on the post office to get their checks."
- FACT: The Social Security Administration no longer mails paper checks, though many still refer to the payments as Social Security checks.
LIE: Joe Biden said, “The president is talking about defending the post office."
- FACT: The CARES Act President signed into law gave USPS a $10 billion loan, and it hasn't even been tapped into yet. According to their own reports, the Postal Service has enough cash on hand to remain liquid through 2021. Moreover, President Obama took similar cost-cutting actions in trying to make the USPS solvent, Obama’s 2013 budget would have ended Saturday mail service and forced the Postal Service to raise postage prices. In 2014, the Obama Administration again called to end Saturday service, while adding further service cuts and delaying prepayments for future retiree healthcare. Around 14,000 mailboxes were removed during the Obama Administration.
